Community playdates or rather our Friday Gamenights are still happening. I've enjoyed all the map submissions and the competitive play from everyone involved. RogueSpartan117 let me know last week that we seem to play the same minigames. Well, I will be creating a new playlist with fresh games moving forward. With that said, remember to send a msg to GUNNER e 11 on XBL if you want to join us Friday nights.

You can also tweet at us @SpartanForce. You may need to re-follow us, since the older tag was changed to @GamersOnTap. Parsnipes and I are starting a new blog. It will be a place for us to post our own content and talk about a wider range of games...and beer.

The latest Halo Waypoint Bulletin has some interesting bits of information. We will be getting another community forge playlist next week in place of the Majestic FFA. There will be 8 new maps in the playlist Community Forge FFA.

The new man at 343 in charge of tweaking competitive playlists has a new round of settings for doubles and Team throwdown. This is a good thing and I congratulate 343 for addressing their weakness as a studio...mainly that they don't play matchmaking or understand how to make a competitive Halo game. Meanwhile, Infinity slayer remains untouched.

And there's a new Title Update coming. We're finally getting the big "X" markers when a teammate dies. Why did it take this long for the return of, "On my X"? You can read the entire bulletin at Halowaypoint.com here.

Making the case for a Fall 2013 release of Halo 5

This is not the HaloWaypoint Forum!

I've had this theory for a while. Let me share it with you.

We know that Halo 4 was originally rumored to be released with the 720/Durango/NeXbox. Techgame article. In fact, Halo 4 came with two discs because the game was intended to be on the higher capacity bluray disc that the next gen console will run (that is if it even runs discs).

It's my contention that Halo 4's development schedule was significantly accelerated because of Activision. It's really a two-horse race for FPS and Microsoft couldn't let another holiday season go by without a Halo title. The Anniversary edition didn't sell well the year prior, and failed to attract "new" Halo fans.

It's like the tobacco industry. It's not about your current customers, because they'll keep coming back even though they want to stop. It's all about attracting new, young customers every year.

Halo 4 was a bootcamp for the employees at 343. It wasn't the game they were all brought on board to make. It was simply the game in which they would learn how to do it.

Frank O'Connor talking to the examiner.com

"It wasn't flawless by any stretch of the imagination, but by most objective criteria, it was a resounding success. So we know we have a lot to do. And we know we have a lot to learn. But we also know that we now have the capacity, the teamwork, the technology and the experience to do much better next time.

There are a ton of things we wish we could done better: Features that didn't make it into the final game. Glitches that emerged. Missteps made. DLC fiascos. Communication breakdowns.

But there were things that went astonishingly well - the creation of a genuinely competitive AAA studio chief among them. A collection of talent and souls that can do something genuinely amazing on this and next-generation hardware. The overhaul of an amazing game engine - but one that really needed to be overhauled - and an amassed education on systems, people, code and audience that will stand us in great stead for the future."

Why would Microsoft release Halo 5 within a year of Halo 4?

Because We know that the next console will arrive xmas 2013. It makes sense that Microsoft would want to sell their own game along with the new xbox, ensuring that a new generation of gamers are introduced to Halo and the Spartan IV's. But there's another reason. Activision is able to release a new COD game every year because they have two studios working on the franchise. Whether Microsoft likes it or not, they either need two/three more studios or start cranking out Halo's. There are already rumor's of a 2014 release of Halo Wars 2.

If the rumors of Halo Wars 2 aren't true, at least we know that 343 is looking at story arc's outside of Master Chief. There's also the original Halo trilogy remakes possibly headed for the Xbox 720.

Yeah, this all kind of makes sense, sort of, but how does any of this lead one to believe that 343 is already working on Halo 5? How is that possible?

Because they were making both games simultaneously. We've witnessed the release of new Spartan Ops Episodes. That's an example of how quickly and efficiently they can get their mo-cap, voice acting, etc produced. What about game engine and artwork. All done. Just go back to Frank's quote. The heavy lifting for the studio has already been accomplished. Now they're ready to start cranking out games.

And does anyone really think that Microsoft will allow Bungie to release Destiny for the next-gen before they have their next Halo game ready to be shipped?

Castle Map Pack rumored to include "ForgeWorld".

According to the video game blog gamepillar.com, the castle map pack will arrive on April 1 and bring with it "ForgeWorld" from Halo:Reach. If this is true, than I'm very excited for the next Halo 4 DLC. The Majestic map pack is by far the best DLC that Halo has offered. But why did it take so long?

By all accounts, things are starting to come together for the game and also the studio. The playlist has setttled down, and that's in large part to the addition of Bravo, or Mr. BravoMLG for the uninitiated. We now have objective and hardcore playlists with settings that play to the game's strengths without creating rage-fueled tantrums by even the most mature among us....ugh...um.

Halo Waypoint now offers links to add maps, gametypes and screenshots to your Xbox account. This feature was a staple of Halo games under the direction of Bungie. It was frustrating not having it at launch, but at least things are starting to come together. And there's still one more update.

When will we get a skill-based rank - 1-50? And also, why can't we prestige after SR130?

Well, at least we continue to forge ahead creating maps and gametypes that make Halo 4 worthy fan adoration and community-spawning excitement.

(source: TLDRgamer.com)

After the events of Halo 4, along with the recent conclusion of
Spartan Ops Season 1, the Halo universe has been shaken to it’s very
core.

Master Chief has, for all intents and purposes, retired. Cortana has
ceased to "exist”, ONI has ordered the assassination of Catherine
Halsey, and Halsey has been shot and had her arm amputated, no doubt a
result of a clumsy, fumbling Sangheili surgeon with no human medical
experience. Requiem has been flung into it’s sun, and the Janus Key has
been revealed to be the map to the remaining Forerunner Technology, but
is split between the UNSC and Storm faction. Meanwhile, Lasky seems to
be on his way to a court-martial.

Halo 4 campaign’s story was interesting and I enjoyed it, but I felt
that it left too many details unsaid in a bid to push folk to the
Terminals, when truly, these details should have been added to the
game’s main storyline. Heck, adding Osman into Spartan Ops wouldn’t have
rung any bells for anyone unless they’ve read Halo: Glasslands and
Halo: The Thursday War. continue reading>>>

“Halo 4” Majestic Map Pack coming next week (Feb 25th)

From Major Nelson's blog

343 Industries announced today that the Majestic Map Pack for Halo 4 is coming on February 25th. Developed by Certain Affinity, in collaboration with 343 Industries, the Majestic Map Pack delivers the close-quarters action fans have been craving in three all-new small to medium sized maps designed specifically for tight, competitive combat in small-team and free-for-all modes: Landfall, Monolith and Skyline.

28 screen shots are Major Nelson's Flickr page and here are the details of each map in the add-on:

Landfall: A shining city under attack…
The world of Tribute is now a graveyard, but its capital was once a bright beacon of commerce among the inner colonies. Fight in the corridors and courtyards of Casbah’s port authority buildings, but don’t stand still too long. Perfect for Infinity Slayer, this small to midsize asymmetrical map offers interiors with sparse cover, which encourages close-range combat, while the exteriors offer long lines of sight to stalk your opponents. Awesome jump routes let players spring around the outside of the map, incidentally offering a perfect view of the city as it is razed by the Covenant’s brutal assault.

Monolith: Adrift in a forgotten asteroid belt…
This monument and many like it were built by the Forerunners after their final victory over the ancient humans. This small map has central man-cannons, short corridors, almost no cover, and open sightlines which make the location great for a mixture of close and mid-range battle. Monolith harkens back to more classic "Halo” arena-based maps, and its symmetry lends nicely to objective-based modes like Capture the Flag. Monolith is an open battlefield; wherever you look, you will witness the ferocious action that only a small and open map can provide.

Skyline: Combat analysts agree…
The rooftop terrain on this new space tether construction site is an ideal training environment for close-quarters infantry combat. This map, perched high above the sights of reconstruction in Cascade’s capital city, is small and symmetrical, perfect for Regicide with a mixture of high and low spaces and plenty of cover. Don’t think cover means you’re safe, however – this map holds explosive fuel cells that can and will wreak havoc in Skyline’s confined spaces, not to mention the long, long drop if you misstep.

The Majestic Map Pack will be available on Xbox LIVE for 800 Microsoft Points. Players who purchase the "Halo 4” War Games Map Pass* or "Halo 4” Limited Edition will receive access to both the Crimson and Majestic Map Packs as well as the final map pack when it releases in April at a 15 percent savings versus purchasing them individually.1

New Game Type: "Infinity Rumble”

"Halo 4’s” new game type, Infinity Rumble, is exclusive for a limited time to Majestic Map Pack owners and brings a few new twists to the War Games experience. It is a free-for-all game type where players can earn personal ordnance; all special medal and style kills help you earn ordnance faster, and you can also earn assists off of enemy players for even more medal points. Players must carefully conserve and use their ordnance at just the right moment, or combine power-ups with power weapons in the race to be first. Every kill, and every death counts in Infinity Rumble, and this is reflected with a slower spawn time in the free-for-all matches.

New Playlists: "Majestic Team DLC” and "Majestic FFA DLC”

The Majestic Map Pack also brings two new playlists to the War Games experience:

Majestic FFA DLC (8 players): Majestic FFA is an incredibly intense free-for-all playlist. Players are all alone in this playlist with seven others, vying for first place!

Majestic Team DLC (4 vs. 4): Majestic Team DLC is a 4 vs. 4 playlist that focuses on both team play and tight objective combat.

The new maps will also be integrated into existing Infinity Slayer, Capture the Flag, SWAT, Regicide, Doubles, Team Objective, and Team Throwdown playlists. DLC maps will appear in a playlist if all members of the match have the content purchased or the War Games Map Pass.

1/9/13 Waypoint Bulletin

"A look at early 2013

While Frank’s words present the perfect note to end on, I’d like to
share a little about the future he spoke of. One of the best parts about
being blessed with the caretaker role of such an expansive universe is
the opportunity for exploration, and books play an important role in
that. Halo: Primordium came out in early 2012, and Halo: Silentium, the
third novel in the Forerunner Saga written by Greg Bear, is slated to be
released on March 19, 2013. Here is a little about it, for the fiction
fans amongst you:

In
Halo: Cryptum, Greg Bear began a three-book arc set in the era of the
Forerunners, the ancient and enigmatic creators and builders of the
Halos, which continued in Halo: Primordium. Now, in the last years of
the Forerunner Empire, chaos rules. The Flood, a horrifying
shape-changing parasite, has arrived in force, aided by unexpected
allies. Internal strife within the ecumene has desperately weakened
Forerunner defenses.

Only the Ur-Didact and the Librarian, a husband and wife pushed
into desperate conflict, hold the keys to salvation. Facing the
consequences of a profound tragedy, one of them must commit a great
atrocity in order prevent an unmatched evil from dominating the entire
universe.

As far as Halo 4 goes, we have some fun stuff planned for late
January and beyond. After the Infinity Challenge concludes, regular
Matchmaking updates will start up again (and that includes the return of
the second half of Spartan Ops Season 1, which features brand new
stories, missions and locations). It’s important to note the below
scheduled is not finalized and could very well change, but as of right
now, here is what we’re tentatively planning:

Week of 1/21
Spartan Ops Episode 6: Five new missions and an accompanying new CG cinematic.
"Forge Test" playlist (name not final): A rotational hopper
featuring small Forge maps such as Relay. Help us test these maps by
providing feedback and reporting bugs that will assist us in getting
them ready for Matchmaking!
Specializations: Pioneer and Pathfinder Specializations unlocked for all players.

Week of 1/28
Spartan Ops Episode 7: Five new missions and an accompanying new CG cinematic.
Grifball playlist: A rotational hopper featuring everybody’s favorite virtual sport. Catch the disease!
Specializations: Engineer and Stalker Specializations unlocked for all players.

Week of 2/4
Spartan Ops Episode 8: Five new missions and an accompanying new CG cinematic.
Team Doubles playlist: A rotational hopper for those of you that like action of the 2 vs 2 variety.
Specializations: Rogue and Tracker Specializations unlocked for all players.

Matchmaking updates go live every Monday, and potential playlists for
the month of February include both FFA and a new and improved version
of Team Snipers. Late February will also bring both a Title Update and
the Majestic Map Pack (which includes two small maps and one
medium-sized map) to Halo 4 as well. Expect more information on all of
those things next month.

While we’re excited about our upcoming Matchmaking updates, I’m
also excited about some of the things that may be low on your priority
list but are high on mine. Take communication, for instance. I believe
we need to work harder to get you information. We communicate through
Bulletins, blog articles, social media channels and our forums. While
that may sound like a lot, there are still numerous people asking
questions about information that is already out there. That means we
need to work harder to make sure the information is where you are. We’ve
already started this effort on the forums (which is the first and most
important place we look for feedback). We launched a "News”
section, where we provide links to all headline articles, press
releases, and blog articles we publish on a daily basis. There are also
threads in that section where you can suggest a topic (Battle Rifle bulletology, anyone?) or ask a question
for a future Bulletin. We’ll continue working on our communication, and
you can gage our efforts by keeping an eye on the following forum
accounts:

Forum Team: General support
MM Systems Team: Matchmaking information
bs angel: General updates

For now, I’m going to let you soak up all of the above information.
Fret not, though, because we’ll meet again. Same time, same place next
week, as a matter of fact. Until then…
